All
my life, especially since I have gotten older, I have wondered what my ancestry
looked like. Where do I come from, who are my people, where are they now? I
even tried Ancestry.com but of course that did not help. I did find my Fathers
family though, because an Aunt was documenting the family tree. I also found
and met a Brother who was my father's son from another woman.
However,
when I was a Flight Attendant I heard from several Jewish people and people in
Government that the Mormon Church has records of the slaves that were brought
here to the United States starting from 1619 when the first slaves were brought
to the country, and that I could look up the information that way. Ok, well
that seems very easy to some, but for the practical or average Black person in
America, it is not that easy to just hop on a plane and head up to Salt Lake
City, in order to ask the Mormon Church if I can access their records of the
slaves that came over to America. Reason being, I don't know who my Great-great
Grandparents were, they were sold and traded. Families were separated as soon
as they got off the boat.
All
of my white friends could tell me, well..... that their roots started in
France, Russia, Germany, Ireland or where ever it was that they hailed from.
All I could say is that I was from America and my family members at some point
in history had been slaves, but since we had taken on the family name of our
slave owners, I have no idea what those names could possibly be. We'd also been
renamed by those slave owners because our names had been to hard to pronoun.
Well,
those slaves came from somewhere. Did they not? Africa! Well, from what I
understand the African people say that black people are not their people, they
are nothing more than a bunch of cotton picking ni@@@'s. I have heard this
myself, I don't need to say that such and such told me. And historically they
had sold us to those who'd brought us here to America to be slaves. The
African's will tell you in a heartbeat that no, they did not sell their own
people.
So
where did we actually come from? We are not African, not one drop of African do
we have flowing in our veins. Now yes of course I know that their are some
black people here that come from Africa, but have you ever really noticed, they
are not in our black neighborhoods and do not really associate with the average
black American. Not all but most. I need to say this early on and I don't want
to hear or see anyone write to me that they can explain my origins... I am not
having it. You see we are not African and there is no country that I know of
that is called Black, so what is it?
Well
here goes. Just like my white friends hail from different countries or
nationalities, so do people who have dark skin. We are not all African just
because we are black.
Thus,
here is the reason why I have created this blog. I want Black America to know
their origin and to be proud of who they are. As I have accumulated information
in my research, I have come across many sources who are correct in their
findings, however their approach in relaying it can be at times offensive or
down right mean. I have decided to take a more academic approach, along
with scholarly resources, visual, other researchers such as myself, and the
Bible.
Now I
know right there, THE Bible will scare some of you off, but I need you to humor
me for a while. As I give you information, go and research it for yourself and
then feel free to do with it as you will. Never believe anything I say, but
consider it.
A
little about me:
My
name is Sharman. I went back to college later in life than most. For myself
only, I appreciate it more that I went back in my forties, because not only did
I have life experiences to bring into the class with me, I also had a maturity
I did not possess when I was younger.
I
chose to get my Associates in Music and I excelled so much academically that I
had my choice of colleges. I didn't need to apply to a University, because they
came to me. Notre Dame, LSU, Penn State, Harvard, Columbia, and Texas Tech just
to name a few. I also received a Presidential Scholarship for 12,000 dollars
per semester and several others as well. I took school serious, because I was
there to learn and absorb.
I
chose St. Mary's University, because it was close to my house and I knew that
they had a great Law School. Although I received my Associates in Music from
NorthWest Vista, I chose to obtain my Bachelor's in Theology from St. Mary's.
That means I received my Bachelor's in Humanities and Social Sciences. I knew
going in that I was not Catholic but I wanted to study Theology because I
wanted to do a deep study of the Bible. I had no idea going in, that I would
come out a different person altogether. Learning things I had not known were
possible, shaking the foundations of my beliefs, and sending me down a path in
a new direction to find myself and my true identity.
My
Professor's were Jesuit Priest', Attorney's of Law, or Dr's of different
fields as was necessary to be a Professor, but my Professor's were all
Catholic and to me that has turned out to be the biggest blessing of all, not
because I too am a Catholic, because I am not. It turned out to be important
because everything I learned was first hand, and source direct and not by
someone who said they heard it from a friend or someone on the internet.
I
have made sure that I have gathered as much academic information that I can,
and I have also enlisted others with greater insight than I have. You see, I
too am still learning. I will not ever claim to have a greater knowledge than
everybody who knows this truth, because it would be untrue, but it is
extensive.
So we
will walk methodically through this process of learning, and discovery. I will
give you information, and you in turn can send me information, please. This
message is not for everyone. I am not trying to cause a racial uproar, or hurt
anyone, I am pleading my case to Blacks, but others are more than welcome to
join the discussion. This is a serious discussion, so I will delete any
negative, or racist comments, because they are not necessary, that is why I am
creating this blog.
There
are those who are waking up, and there are those who do not know, but it is my
hope that they will all learn and grow.
Ladies
and Gentlemen, I will plead the case to the Black American and those scattered
to four corners of the Earth! You are more than who you think!
